KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Stephen Emmott

Director, European Science Programme, Microsoft Research Cambridge

 

Stephen is founder and Director of the Microsoft Research European Science Programme, focused on enabling and accelerating ‘new kinds’ of science and computing.

Stephen has worked in research fields at the intersection of computing and science for almost two decades through appointments at AT&T Bell Laboratories; BT Laboratories, as founder, chief scientist and director of NCRs advanced research lab (the Knowledge Lab), and at University College London (UCL), where he still retains a position now as visiting professor. Stephen holds a PhD in Computational Neuroscience.

He has also contributed widely to science and technology policy and thinking, including being a member of the Chancellor of the Exchequer‘s Science & Innovation Framework committee and The Chancellor‘s Scientific Advisory Board, advising the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council and the UK Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Danish Ministry for Science & Technology, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the UK Department of Trade & Industry.

Recently, Stephen initiated, led and was editor-in-chief of the Towards 2020 Science project and report, which made the cover feature of Nature in March this year.
