DESCRIPTION: Scalable Management of Real-time Data Streams from Mobile Sources using Utility Computing (Jeremy Cohen) The data generated by our everyday activities and movements is increasing rapidly as more and more data collection devices are installed around us. These static devices are in fixed locations making data retrieval relatively easy. Enhancements in wireless data transmission technologies have made real-time data collection from mobile devices a realistic possibility. However, mobile devices are unpredictable and may join or leave the network randomly. Planning for the required computing capacity to manage such a network can be difficult. We describe a model that uses on-demand utility computing provision to develop a data-stream management fabric that scales dynamically to support the number of devices in the network. This makes the most efficient use of hardware resources and lowers costs.
