VREs: Where are we now?

Mini-workshop Call for Papers
Organisers: Marina Jirotka, Annamaria Carusi, Anne Trefethen
The JISC VRE programme started in April 2004 with initial funding for 3 years. This has recently been extended for a further 2 years with the VRE2 programme. Motivated by a drive to embed e-Science technologies across a broad range of research areas, the programme started out with an open definition of a VRE. Over the course of the programme, the vision and definition of VREs has continuously evolved, and the initial idea of a set of technologies that facilitate research practices by enhancing the means and opportunities for collaboration has resulted in a variety of interpretations by the different projects funded. These have incorporated different uses, designs and developments for the purposes of initial resource discovery, access to data, analysis, interpretation, experiment, as well as creativity.
This is a 90 minute workshop with 4 panel presentations, and discussion.
Papers for 15 minute presentations on the following themes are invited:
- the variety of ways in which the technologies have been developed from the initial idea,
- the cross-cutting issues which are common to the different projects,
- insights concerning the design and development process,
- lessons learned for design and development in the context of different research practices and institutions.
Papers should be submitted on the conference website: http://www.allhands.org.uk/2007
